About Church of St Edmund
The Church of St Edmund is a Church of England church in Kellington, West Yorkshire. Dating from around 1150 and designated Grade I, it occupies raised ground about a quarter of a mile west of the village, where its prominent position makes it a notable landmark.
The church has Norman origins, with later additions in Early English and Decorated styles. It was associated with the Knights Templar by the late 12th century and later passed to the Knights Hospitaller. Archaeological work uncovered medieval burials, including a 14th-century tomb linked to the Templars. A distinctive magnesian limestone carving, known as the Kellington Serpent-Stone, depicts a sword, a person and a serpent-like creature. Concerns about mining-related subsidence led to extensive underpinning in the early 1990s. During this work, the tower was taken down and subsequently reconstructed in its previous form.
