About Church of St Felix, Felixkirk
The Church of St Felix is the Church of England parish church for Felixkirk in North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish place of worship and has held Grade II* protection since 1966, recognising its significant historic and architectural character.
Christian worship on the site predates 1066. A twelfth-century expansion introduced the side aisles, and substantial fabric from that period remains. The sandstone building is mainly covered with stone slates, while lead protects the chancel roof. Its western tower dates from the fifteenth century and features angled buttresses, a clock on its southern face, paired bell openings and a crenellated parapet. During extensive restoration in 1859 and 1860, W. H. Dykes removed the later square-ended sanctuary and reconstructed a curved chancel over earlier foundations. Romanesque details include the south aisle’s western window and a doorway reset within the chancel. Inside are William de Cantilupe’s tomb, dating from 1309, and a similarly dated figure of Eva of Boltby.
