About Church of St John the Evangelist

The Church of St John the Evangelist is an Anglican place of worship at Sleights, within Eskdaleside cum Ugglebarnby in North Yorkshire. The present building has held Grade II listed status since 2005.

A medieval chapel gave way to a replacement built lower on the slope in 1767. This Georgian structure was subsequently removed, and the current church, designed by Ewan Christian in an Early English Gothic style, was consecrated on 20 September 1895. Grosmont sandstone forms the walls, while Westmorland slate covers the roof. The layout comprises a nave and chancel, with an aisle and transept on the northern side and a tower at the north-east corner beneath a pyramid-shaped roof. Features include slender pointed windows, glass by Charles Eamer Kempe, an elaborate timber roof, oak wall lining, and an oak altar and reredos. A separately Grade II listed sandstone monument to the Coates family stands in the churchyard.
