About Chapel Of St John
Chapel Of St John is a ruined Anglican place of worship at Eskdaleside cum Ugglebarnby in North Yorkshire. Standing on elevated ground near Sleights, it is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Dating from around 1260, the chapel was established at the request of Roger, then Abbot of Whitby, to serve worshippers connected with St Mary’s in Whitby. Its hilltop position was difficult for the congregation, and services ceased in 1767 after a replacement church opened nearer the heart of Sleights. Built from sandstone, the simple rectangular structure combined nave and chancel and measured approximately 12 metres long by 5.5 metres wide. The principal remains comprise a section of the western wall with traces of a bevelled window opening, together with the lower sections of the northern and eastern walls. Its substantial masonry is about 0.76 metres thick and rises from a moulded base.
