About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew is a Church of England parish church in Driffield, East Riding of Yorkshire. Dedicated to St Andrew, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Often called the Cathedral of the Wolds locally, the church is particularly valued for its Decorated Gothic architecture.
Although its Norman font dates from around 1130–40 and parts of the chancel may survive from the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, most of the building was erected around 1340. Its plan includes an aisled nave, chancel, north and south porches, and a battlemented western tower. An octagonal spire was lost in a storm in 1715. James Fowler directed substantial restoration from 1866 to 1869, including reconstruction of the eastern wall. The present east window, fitted in 1951, replaced glass damaged during 1941. Memorials include the tomb of Edmund de Mauley and a brass commemorating Sir Roger Godeale. A long programme of repairs concluded with the organ’s complete rebuilding in 2016.
