About Ebenezer Methodist Chapel
Ebenezer Methodist Chapel is a former Primitive Methodist place of worship in East Ayton, North Yorkshire. It received Grade II listed status in 1967. The chapel had closed by the beginning of the 21st century and was subsequently offered for residential conversion.
William Clowes preached in the village during the early 1820s, after which a modest chapel was erected. Growth in attendance led to its replacement by the present building, finished in July 1842 for £470. Constructed from sandstone beneath a slate hipped roof, it has a central arched entrance with a fanlight, large arched windows and a recessed date plaque above the door. Sash windows line the side elevations. Originally, galleries occupied three sides of the interior, while a movable partition allowed part of the space below to function as a separate Sunday school.
