About Church of St Matthew
The Church of St Matthew is a Church of England parish church in Hutton Buscel, near East Ayton in North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s active place of Anglican worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1967, recognising its exceptional architectural and historic importance.
Its earliest surviving fabric is the west tower, dating from around 1180, while the nave was added during the 13th century. Much of the remaining structure, including the chancel, clerestory, south aisle and porch, belongs to the 15th century. Built in sandstone, the church has roofing of slate and stone slabs. William Butterfield carried out a restoration in 1855, which included reconstructing the north aisle and designing the eight-sided font. The three-level tower features rounded openings, a corbelled band and battlements. Inside are a polygonal pulpit incorporating carved Jacobean panels and several memorials from the 18th century.
