About Church of St John the Baptist

The Church of St John the Baptist is the Church of England parish church serving East Ayton in North Yorkshire. Dating largely from the medieval period, it remains a significant feature of the village and has held Grade II* listed status since 1967.

Built around 1135 on the site of an earlier chapel, the church retains its Norman nave, southern entrance, chancel arch and the base of its western tower. A chancel followed during the 1200s, with further changes in the 15th century, including taller tower masonry, new buttresses and altered nave windows. The porch dates from 1634, while the chancel was partly reconstructed in the 18th century and a vestry added in the 19th. Constructed in sandstone, the building has pantiles over its main sections and slate on the porch and vestry. Notable details include the battlemented three-stage tower, beakhead decoration around the Norman doorway, a Venetian-style east window and a font from the 12th century.
