About Church of Saint Nicholas

The Church of Saint Nicholas is a Church of England parish church in Birdsall, North Yorkshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains an important historic place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1966.

Originating in the 12th century, the stone church comprises a four-bay nave, three-bay chancel, south porch and western tower. The tower followed during the 13th century, while the three-light east window dates from the 15th century. Seventeenth-century enlargement was followed by restoration under George Fowler Jones in 1886. Surviving Norman details include rounded doorways, a corbel course carved with animal heads and a drum-shaped font decorated with biblical scenes. Other features include an Anglo-Danish carved stone, a medieval coffin slab and an elaborate 1723 memorial to Thomas Langley.
