About Church of St Theobald
The Church of St Theobald is a former place of worship in Norwich, Norfolk. It served Great Hautbois, close to Coltishall, and attracted medieval pilgrims who came to venerate an image of St Theobald. Although originally dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the saint’s association with the site led to its later name. The church is now a scheduled monument and also holds Grade II* listed status.
The earliest fabric dates to the eleventh century and uses worked flint alongside rough flint masonry. A circular tower was erected during the next century. In the 1200s, the east end was enlarged and a transept added on the southern side for the saint’s image. A southern aisle followed a century later, perhaps offering extra space for visitors, while the porch belongs to the 1400s. After Holy Trinity replaced it in 1864, most of the old structure fell into ruin, although its eastern section became a chapel for funerary use.
