About Church of St Michael

The Church of St Michael is an Anglican parish church in Occold, in the Eye area of Suffolk. It remains a place of worship and is protected at Grade II* for its architectural and historic significance. The village also has a Baptist church.

Although Occold was recorded in 1086 and may then have had two churches, no fabric from the Norman building survives. The present church retains doorways dating from the thirteenth century and a small early window in the chancel, but was largely rebuilt during the fifteenth century. Its windows are mainly Perpendicular in style, while the tower rises in four stages and also dates from that period. Notable furnishings include a medieval misericord carved with a crowned female figure and angels, a fifteenth-century octagonal chalk font, and a pulpit dated 1620. Evidence of former stairs on both sides of the nave indicates that a rood loft once existed or was planned.
