About Church of St Peter

The Church of St Peter is a Church of England place of worship in Norwich, Norfolk. Its full dedication includes St Paul, although it is generally known as St Peter’s. It remains active within the Upper Tas Valley parish and is protected as a Grade I listed building. The church is also recorded as being at risk, with repairs and renovation required.

The building originated around 1000, with an Anglo-Saxon circular tower, nave and chancel. Original rubble masonry faced with worked flint survives in the 19-metre tower and parts of the western nave and chancel. The church was substantially altered during the 14th and 15th centuries, when its roof was raised, aisles enlarged, porch built and Perpendicular windows inserted. Notable details include a tomb dated 1485, an early tower staircase, decorated pew ends, memorial floor stones, Victorian stained glass and six bells. An organ was fitted in 1872, while later restoration in 1986 uncovered evidence of a former side altar.
