About Leighton Road Evangelical Church
Leighton Road Evangelical Church serves the Gainsborough estate in south-east Ipswich, Suffolk. This independent congregation follows Baptist governance, with oversight provided by its pastor and deacons, and is affiliated with the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches. It is the only worship venue within the estate. The chapel remains unlisted and the church is currently pastored by Brian Langston.
The site was acquired from the local borough authority in 1935, and the principal chapel was constructed during that decade. A modest addition behind the original structure later created space for Sunday school use and an accessible toilet. Outside stands an oak thought to be roughly 400 years old. According to local tradition, Margaret Catchpole sometimes tethered her horse to this tree during the nineteenth century. Earlier names for the congregation included Leighton Road Baptist Church and Gainsborough Evangelical Free Church.
