About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is an active Church of England parish church in Norwich, Norfolk. It is protected as a Grade I listed building, recognising its special architectural and historic significance within the national system for safeguarding important buildings.
Built in about 1350, the church is chiefly constructed from flint found locally in Norfolk. Freestone was used more sparingly for the windows and their surrounds. This pale stone had to be transported from quarries in Northamptonshire, making it harder to obtain than the principal building material. The combination of regional flint with carefully placed imported stone reflects the practical approach to materials seen in the church’s medieval fabric.
