About St Mary's Church, Stoke-by-Nayland
St Mary’s Church, Stoke-by-Nayland serves a Church of England parish in the Colchester area of Suffolk. The church remains in parish use and has Grade I protection. It forms part of a combined benefice with the Anglican churches in Leavenheath and Polstead.
Surviving sections are chiefly from the closing decades of the thirteenth century and the opening decades of the fourteenth, among them the southern entrance porch, St Edmund’s Chapel and portions of an aisle. Most of the structure was renewed in fifteenth-century Perpendicular Gothic form under the patronage of Sir John Howard. Distinctive fittings include carved oak doors depicting Christ’s ancestry, a vaulted porch with renewed bosses, and a font decorated with Edward IV’s sunburst rose and symbols of the Evangelists. A pinnacled tower rises 38 metres above Dedham Vale. Memorials include historic brasses, while the musical furnishings comprise an eight-bell ring and a pipe organ derived from an instrument made around 1834.
