About Church of Saints Peter and Paul
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a medieval Church of England parish church in Norwich, Norfolk. It remains a parish church and is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its exceptional size, at 171 feet in length with a 130-foot tower, reflects the wealth that the medieval wool trade brought to East Anglia.
Reconstruction began during the early fifteenth century, with most of the building finished by about 1450 and the tower completed in 1511. Wealthy local merchant families financed the work, which used costly Barnack limestone alongside flint. The unified Perpendicular Gothic design includes a six-bay aisled nave, transepts, two porches, a chancel and the west tower. Notable survivals include the original ringing gallery, an angel roof, carved roof bosses and an octagonal font depicting the sacraments. Much medieval glass and the rood screen were lost following the Reformation, although limited restoration in 1867, 1903 and 1912 left much of the historic fabric intact.
