About Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church

Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church is an active Church of England parish church on Church Street in Eye, Suffolk. Standing east of the former Eye Castle mound, it is the town’s sole Anglican church. Its architectural and historic significance is recognised through its Grade I listing.

The present building dates chiefly from the early 14th century, with substantial 15th-century additions. Parts of the south porch may survive from the late 13th century, while the west tower was begun around the close of the 15th century. Rising 101 feet, the tower has decorative flintwork across its western face and contains eight bells, including two cast by Miles Gray in 1640. J. K. Colling directed an extensive restoration in 1869 and designed the octagonal font. Other features include two similar 16th-century Purbeck marble tombs, a carved stone reredos installed in 1908, and a brick dole table with a stone top donated in 1601.
