About Saint Michael & All Angels
Saint Michael & All Angels is a Church of England church in Llanvihangel Crucorney, near Abergavenny in Monmouthshire. Standing at the heart of the village, it has been protected at Grade II since 1956 in recognition of its historical significance and remaining medieval fabric.
Its origins may reach back to the tenth century, possibly replacing an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Michael on the summit of the nearby Skirrid. The nave began in the Norman period, while the chancel and lower tower probably date from the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The tower may have gained its present height during the sixteenth century, when the south porch was also added. Much of the deteriorating nave was reconstructed in 1835, with its oak roof replaced. New windows followed between 1887 and 1897. Another failing roof was removed in 1974, leaving part of the nave uncovered until a replacement was completed in the 2000s.
