About St Mary's Church, Stamford
St Mary’s Church, Stamford is an active Church of England parish church in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Standing on St Mary’s Hill near the river crossing, it is a Grade I listed building. The parish follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition and is under the alternative episcopal oversight of the Bishop of Richborough.
Founded in the 12th century, the church gained its tower in the 13th century and its spire in the 14th. Together they rise to about 51 metres. Repairs in 1788 used iron bands to secure the spire, which was reinforced with internal ties in 1913. The medieval Corpus Christi Chapel contains a rare decorated wagon-vaulted ceiling and has links with the institution that became Stamford School. Other features include stained glass designed by Christopher Whall, an organ made by Gray in 1829, and memorial screens commemorating parishioners who died in the First World War and those who served during the Second World War.
