About St George's Church, Stamford
St George’s Church in Stamford, Lincolnshire, is a Church of England place of worship dating from 1401. It is protected as a Grade I listed building, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural importance.
Parts of the building predate 1401. The largely original tower probably arose in the early thirteenth century, although its upper stage was reconstructed during the seventeenth century. The nave retains thirteenth-century columns alongside additions from the following two centuries. William Bruges, the first Garter King of Arms, was an important patron and is buried here. His gifts included the angel-decorated chancel roof, whose shields display symbols associated with Christ’s Passion. Fragments of medieval glass connected with the Knights of the Garter also survive. Memorials include tablets to Tobie Norris, Sir Richard Cust and Blanche, Lady Wake, while a 1909 window commemorates architect John Charles Traylen. Victorian work removed the pews, added a pulpit and renewed the flooring.
