About St John the Baptist's Church, Burringham
St John the Baptist's Church stands in Burringham, near Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire, beside the eastern bank of the River Trent. Formerly an Anglican place of worship, it closed in 1983 and became redundant in 1984. The church is protected at Grade II and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Samuel Sanders Teulon designed the church, which was erected in 1856–57. Red brick is complemented by black-brick detailing and dressed limestone, while slate covers the main roofs. Its plan includes a five-bay nave, an apsidal chancel, a vestry, an organ chamber and a low western tower containing the entrance porch. Inside, red, yellow and black brickwork accompanies patterned encaustic floor tiles. Notable features include nineteenth-century stained glass, an octagonal font with coloured tile panels, and stars and constellations painted above the altar. The organ dates from 1849 and was originally made for St Andrew’s Church in Epworth.
