About All Saints Church
All Saints Church is an active Church of England place of worship in Winterton, near Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire. Set close to the town centre, it serves both religious and community purposes. The building is protected at Grade I and has also appeared on the Heritage at Risk Register because of gradual deterioration. In 2018, it held Anglican worship twice each week and hosted a Saturday Roman Catholic service.
Built around 1080 on the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon church, it retains early fabric in the west wall. Parts of the nave and the lower tower date from the 11th century, while later medieval work raised and altered the tower. Its distinctive Romanesque tower is one of about 60 known examples in Lincolnshire. The largely medieval plan includes aisles, two transepts, a substantial chancel, porches, vestries and an organ in the north side of the choir. Restorations took place in 1867, from 1903, and during the 1950s, followed by major roof, masonry, drainage and tower repairs in the 21st century.
