About St Michael's Church, Burwell
St Michael’s Church, Burwell, is a former Anglican place of worship in the village of Burwell, near Louth in Lincolnshire. Set on sloping ground beside the A16, it is a Grade I listed building and is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, having been declared redundant in 1981.
The church dates from the early 12th century and probably stood alongside the nearby Benedictine priory. Its chancel was added in the 13th century, while the west tower began in the early 1500s and was heightened during the late 1700s. Built chiefly from green sandstone rubble with dressed limestone, it also incorporates red brick. A Norman chancel arch has carved capitals showing stags and scroll forms, with part of a medieval wall painting above. Other notable details include a 15th-century shield-decorated font, a 17th-century pine pulpit, carved angels in the tower roof and several marble memorials. Restoration took place in 1911.
