About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England church in Boston, Lincolnshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains an important historic place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The present cruciform stone structure was built during the later 12th century, largely from dressed Barnack stone. Extensive Victorian work was carried out in 1862 under Stamford architect Edward Browning, particularly in the chancel and southern transept, while earlier masonry and details were carefully retained. These include an elaborately carved Norman northern doorway. The chancel contains three 14th-century stone effigies depicting the priest John Boneworth and his parents. Other features include Victorian pews, decorative tiling and a mosaic reredos. Eight bells include 18th-century examples, two recast in 1937, while a separate priest’s bell is believed to date from around 1353.
