About Unitarian Chapel

Unitarian Chapel is a place of worship on High Street in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. Built in 1725 and protected as a Grade II listed building, it has served a Unitarian congregation since 1837, apart from a period of closure between 1902 and 1923.

The congregation traces its beginnings to 1662 and initially gathered in John Disney’s home. Over time, the chapel was associated with Presbyterian, Calvinistic Methodist and other Nonconformist communities. The single-storey Georgian structure is built of largely rendered red brick, with limestone details, a stone base and slate roofing. A limestone porch in the Jacobean Revival style was constructed in 1819, while rear additions followed during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Arched stone windows on the west front were later given Gothic Revival tracery. Inside are an oak pulpit and communion table. Restoration work was carried out in 1987.
