About St. Gilbert's
St. Gilbert’s, at 3 St Gilbert’s Road in Bourne, Lincolnshire, is an active place of Roman Catholic worship in the Nottingham diocese. It serves Bourne within a shared parish that also includes the Catholic church at Deeping St James. Its patron is Gilbert of Sempringham, a Lincolnshire native who established the Gilbertine Order, England’s only home-founded monastic order.
Catholic worship returned to Bourne in 1950, when a temporary timber structure in Exeter Street became the congregation’s base. Increasing attendance later prompted construction of a lasting home. Thomas E. Wilson designed the present church, which opened in 1976 at a cost of approximately £70,000. Bishop James McGuinness conducted its dedication that December. The modest, low-set brick building has a circular plan and room for about 200 worshippers. Its adaptable interior places the sacred space on one side and a hall for parish gatherings on the other. It also provides step-free access, a hearing loop and accessible facilities.
