About Church of St Michael On The Mount
The Church of St Michael On The Mount in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, is a Grade II listed former parish church. It was made redundant and deconsecrated in 1998 following a decline in congregation numbers. After extensive structural repairs, the building was converted into a 16-bedroom hotel, now known as the Old Palace Lodge Lincoln, while retaining its historic fabric.
A church had occupied the site since about 1000 and was recorded in the Domesday Book. It later served the city’s Corpus Christi guild, and Robert Dyghton established a chantry there in 1521. Following damage during the Civil War, little beyond the walls remained. Thomas Sympson constructed a smaller replacement in 1739–40. The present Gothic Revival building was designed by Samuel Sanders Teulon and erected in 1855–56, with an octagonal bell turret, spire and finial among its notable features.
