About St John the Evangelist's Church, Corby Glen
St John the Evangelist’s Church, Corby Glen is an Anglican parish church serving Corby Glen, roughly nine miles south-east of Grantham in Lincolnshire. Dedicated to John the Evangelist, it belongs to a local group of six parishes in the Diocese of Lincoln. The church continues in parish use and has Grade I listed protection.
The oldest surviving fabric is from the twelfth century, although much of the building reflects later medieval enlargement. Constructed in limestone rubble faced with dressed masonry, it combines Norman, Decorated Gothic and Perpendicular Gothic work. Fourteenth-century additions included the aisles, a northern Lady Chapel, a porch and a modest tower. During major fifteenth-century alterations, the nave was made taller and fitted with upper windows, while the chancel and tower were extended. Medieval murals created across those two centuries are especially notable; they came to light beneath damaged whitewash in 1939. Work in 1860 included replacement seating, and repairs to the tower followed in 1928.
