About Saint Peter's Church
Saint Peter’s Church is a Church of England parish church on High Street in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. It remains a place of parish worship and holds Grade I listed status, recognising its considerable historic and architectural importance.
Most of the present church dates from the twelfth to fourteenth centuries and may occupy the site of an older place of worship. Built in limestone with dressed stone details, it comprises a nave, north and south aisles, a southern chapel and porch, a chancel, and a western tower crowned by a 54-metre spire. Surviving features include medieval murals, carved woodwork, stained glass, several historic monuments and a thirteenth-century font bearing a ram’s-head carving. A rare fifteenth-century mechanical clock has a single hand and a painted 24-hour face. Sir Gilbert Scott restored the interior during the 1870s, altering the chancel and removing the western gallery. The three-manual Peter Conacher organ was presented in 1893 and restored in 2006.
