About Saint Laurence

Saint Laurence is a Church of England parish church on Raunds Road in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its dedication has sometimes appeared incorrectly as Saint Lawrence in historical records, but the spelling Saint Laurence was formally confirmed in the national heritage record in 2014.

The earliest surviving work dates from around 1200, when the building comprised a nave and chancel. A south aisle, porch and distinctive octagonal western tower followed in about 1230, while the spire was completed early in the fourteenth century. The chancel was replaced during the fifteenth or sixteenth century and rebuilt again in 1823; the present structure is narrower than its medieval predecessor. Other features include Perpendicular battlements, an original south porch, a pulpit given in 1778 and a weathercock installed in 1882 at a height of 157 feet. The treble bell, named St Denys, was cast in 1957 from two earlier bells brought from Faxton church.
