About St Stephen's
St Stephen's is an active Church of England parish church in Blackpool, Lancashire, with an address on St Stephen's Avenue. It forms part of Blackpool deanery, Lancaster archdeaconry and the Diocese of Blackburn.
The congregation began in 1912 as a mission connected with All Hallows, Bispham, becoming a separate parish in 1919. A larger church designed by Henry Paley was begun in 1925 and consecrated two years later, when only part of the planned structure was complete. Built in vivid red brick with stone details, it has Decorated-style window tracery and a red sandstone interior. The Actors’ Chapel, established in 1929, contains memorials to prominent performers and a painted reredos portraying figures from entertainment. Other features include stained glass from the 1930s and 1960s, a nineteenth-century Henry Willis organ moved here around 1975, and a columbarium added in 1949. A porch, narthex and baptistry were constructed in 2001–02.
