About Holy Cross Church, Woodchurch

Holy Cross Church, Woodchurch stands in the Woodchurch area of Birkenhead on the Wirral, Merseyside. It remains a functioning Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Chester and holds Grade II* listed status.

Parts of the nave date to the 12th century, while the rounded churchyard and a surviving Anglo-Saxon wheel-cross fragment point to possible earlier origins. The chancel, southern aisle and tower were introduced during the 14th century; the aisle was reconstructed and a porch added two centuries later. Built mainly of stone, the church has slate roofing and a tall, two-stage battlemented tower supported by substantial stepped buttresses. Notable features include medieval glass and tiles, a late 15th-century octagonal font carved with angels and Passion scenes, and 17th-century memorial panels. A Jesse window damaged by bombing in 1941 was repaired in 1945. The organ dates from 1938, with rebuilding undertaken in 1997, while eight Whitechapel bells were cast in 1971.
