About St Mary's Church, Higham
St Mary’s Church, Higham, is a redundant Anglican church in Church Street, Lower Higham, around four miles north-west of Rochester, Kent. Dating from about 1050, it is protected at Grade I and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Founded during the Anglo-Saxon period, the church was reconstructed following the Norman Conquest and retains a Norman font, blocked window and traces of a doorway. Flint and ragstone walls support a tiled roof and a shingle-covered spire added in 1710. The nave and broad south aisle are similar in size, while the former chancel now serves as the Lady Chapel. Notable fittings include an ornate fifteenth-century south door, a five-arched timber rood screen and a pulpit from the same century. The building underwent repairs in the early 1800s and a further restoration in 1863, when its furnishings and windows were renewed. Its stained glass belongs to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
