About Bethel Strict Baptist Chapel, Robertsbridge
Bethel Strict Baptist Chapel, Robertsbridge is a former Strict Baptist place of worship in Robertsbridge, East Sussex. Sometimes known as Bethel Calvinist Chapel, it closed around 1999 and subsequently received permission for residential conversion. The building is protected at Grade II.
The chapel was founded by preacher James Weller, whose ministry had attracted substantial congregations in Kent and East Sussex. A friend provided a High Street property on a 50-year lease, together with funds for its upkeep. Construction began in November 1842, and the chapel opened on 17 January 1843. Built in plain brick, it stands partly concealed by older properties along the High Street. The congregation was formally established as a church in August 1844. During its early years, many worshippers travelled from the existing Strict Baptist congregation at Burwash rather than coming from Robertsbridge itself.
