About Robertsbridge United Reformed Church
Robertsbridge United Reformed Church is a former place of worship in the East Sussex village of Robertsbridge. The building closed for worship in September 2015, and its congregation later joined others in forming Community Church Robertsbridge. It is protected as a Grade II listed building in recognition of its architectural and historic interest.
The church was completed in 1881 for Congregational worship after a group led by Edward Piper separated from the local Wesleyan Methodist congregation. Thomas Elworthy, an architect based in St Leonards-on-Sea, designed the richly ornamented building using a mixture of architectural styles. A memorial tablet records Piper, who died shortly after construction was finished and before he could deliver the opening sermon. The exterior also bears a foundation stone and another stone naming Elworthy and the date.
