About St. Dunstan's, Canterbury
St. Dunstan’s, Canterbury is an active Church of England parish church where London Road meets Whitstable Road in Canterbury, Kent. Named for Dunstan, who served as Canterbury’s archbishop during the tenth century, it also lent its name to the nearby area west of the River Stour. The church is protected at Grade I and has belonged to a shared pastoral arrangement with central Canterbury parishes since 2010.
Originating in the eleventh century, traditionally dated to 1050, the building was renovated under architect Ewan Christian from 1878 to 1880. In 1174 Henry II stopped here, put on penitential clothing and then walked towards Canterbury Cathedral in atonement for Thomas Becket’s killing. Beneath the Nicholas Chapel lies the Roper burial vault, said to hold Thomas More’s head after his daughter Margaret recovered it. Three coloured-glass windows decorate the chapel. The slender bell chamber contains six bells arranged across two levels, including one believed to have been made in 1325.
