About All Saints Church
All Saints Church is a Church of England parish church in Lydd, Kent, within the Diocese of Canterbury. Sometimes called the Cathedral on the Marsh, it extends for 199 feet and is Kent’s longest parish church. The building has been protected at Grade I since 1950.
Although built in 1401, the church may contain remains of a small Romano-British basilica dating from the late fifth century, while much of the surviving structure is medieval. Ragstone rubble, a tiled roof and elements of Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular design reflect its development over time. Its crenellated western tower, constructed between 1435 and 1450, rises to 132 feet and houses eight bells recast in 1926. Historic features include monumental brasses, medieval timberwork and memorial sculpture. Wartime bombing destroyed the chancel in 1940; it was reconstructed after the conflict in an Early English manner.
