About Church of the Holy Cross

The Church of the Holy Cross stands near Westgate in Canterbury, Kent. No longer used for worship, it now serves as Canterbury Guildhall and accommodates meetings of the city council. The building is listed at Grade II* in recognition of its historic and architectural importance.

Archbishop Simon Sudbury established the church, which was finished by 1381 and once belonged to St Gregory’s Priory. Its plan comprises a nave and chancel with an aisle on either side, while a square tower faces north-west towards the River Stour. The church became redundant and was deconsecrated in 1972. Canterbury City Council subsequently acquired the building and adapted it for civic use. The Prince of Wales formally opened the converted Guildhall on 9 November 1978.
