About Church of St Clement, Old Romney
The Church of St Clement, Old Romney is a Church of England church in New Romney, Kent. Dedicated to Saint Clement, an early Bishop of Rome, it is protected at Grade I for its architectural and historic importance.
A church may have occupied the site since the eighth century, with the Saxon building replaced by a simple Norman structure in the eleventh or twelfth century. The present church dates mainly from the thirteenth century and stands on a raised man-made site intended to reduce the risk of flooding. Its plan includes a nave, chancel, two side chapels, a north porch and a modest tower at the south-west corner. Inside are eighteenth-century enclosed pews, a west gallery carried on Doric columns, Georgian text panels and a square font dating from around 1300. Restoration took place during the twentieth century, including repairs begun in 1959 and completed in 1968. Filming for the 1963 production *Dr Syn, Alias the Scarecrow* also contributed to work on the pews, gallery and gallery stairs.
