About Church of St Mildred
The Church of St Mildred is a Church of England place of worship in Canterbury’s central St Mildred’s district. It forms part of the Canterbury benefice shared with St Dunstan and St Peter, within the city’s archdeaconry and diocese, and follows an Anglo-Catholic tradition. Protected at Grade I since 1949, it is Canterbury’s last church of pre-Conquest origin surviving within the old walled area.
Construction probably began around the middle of the 11th century, although its precise foundation date is uncertain. Anglo-Saxon masonry remains in a pair of nave walls, while the chancel is also thought to pre-date the Norman Conquest. The interior comprises five nave bays and two in the chancel. Later medieval work, including the chapels and much of the nave, took place from the 1200s through to 1512. A major restoration followed in 1861. Formerly held by St Augustine’s Abbey, the building became Crown property when the monastery was dissolved in 1538.
