About Catholic Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury

The Catholic Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury is a Roman Catholic parish church at 59 Burgate, Canterbury, Kent. Standing near Canterbury Cathedral at the junction with Canterbury Lane, it remains the city’s sole Roman Catholic church. Mass is celebrated throughout the week, with several services on Sundays.

Construction began in 1874, and the Gothic Revival building opened in April 1875. Local architect John Green Hall prepared the design, influenced by E. W. Pugin. It occupies land formerly containing a medieval chapel; although that chapel was removed in 1871, its St Mary Magdalene tower survives. Later alterations included extensions and internal reordering during the 1960s, followed by a redesigned sanctuary in 1989. Notable features include stained glass above the altar, an octagonal limestone and marble altar, a two-manual organ rebuilt in 1990, and chapels containing relics associated with Thomas Becket and Óscar Romero.
