About St Michael's Church

St Michael’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in Southampton’s Old Town, Hampshire. Standing on St Michael’s Square near Bugle Street, it is the sole surviving place of worship among the five churches that once served the walled medieval town. It is protected as a Grade I listed building and is regarded as Southampton’s oldest structure that remains in use.

The church was established around 1070, after Southampton shifted westwards from the earlier Saxon community at Hamwic. Its first design was cruciform, and the lower levels of the central tower survive from the earliest building. Chapels and broader aisles were added during the medieval period, while a fifteenth-century doorway remains in the west wall. Substantial alterations in the 1830s included raised floors, remodelled aisles and a new roof. The spire, originally medieval and later reconstructed, was heightened in 1887 to serve as a more prominent marker for ships. A comprehensive restoration was finished in 1970.
