About Above Bar Church
Above Bar Church is an evangelical congregation at 69 Above Bar Street in central Southampton, Hampshire. Affiliated with the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches, it occupies a corner site beside Ogle Road. Its present premises combine street-level shops with the church’s worship space and additional rooms on the upper floors.
The church began in 1876 through the preaching of missionary Henry Samuel Earl. A congregation was formally constituted that August with 33 members, initially meeting in rented premises. Donations enabled land to be acquired, and volunteers reused bricks and windows from a dismantled skating rink when constructing a permanent church, opened in 1880. By the 1970s, serious structural deterioration made extensive repairs necessary, and the Victorian building offered little adaptable space. A replacement designed by Robert Potter opened in 1981.
