About St. Michael and All Angels

St. Michael and All Angels stands beside Bassett Avenue in Southampton and remains an active Church of England parish church. It belongs to North Stoneham and Bassett parish and draws the largest congregation of its three churches. The building received Grade II protection in 1969.

Edward Prioleau Warren drew up the plans, and Violet Fleming marked the start of construction by placing the foundation stone in 1897. A shortage of funds meant that work proceeded in two phases before completion in May 1910. The restrained exterior uses red brick, pale stone around the openings, slate roofing and a small western bell turret. Inside, stone ribs carry a vaulted concrete ceiling above the four-bay nave. A carved Crucifixion crowns the screen before the chancel. Frank O. Salisbury’s eastern stained glass portrays Christ between Michael and Gabriel, while Francis Skeat’s 1962 western window commemorates Ethel Young, killed in the 1940 bombing. Urgent repairs to the roof and drainage were finished in 2016.
