About St James West End

St James West End is an Anglican parish church on Church Hill in Southampton, Hampshire. Serving the West End community within the Borough of Eastleigh, it belongs to the Church of England. The present building has held Grade II listed status since 14 February 1983.

The parish was established in 1836, and its original brick church opened in 1838 on elevated ground. That building featured a tower and masonry spire. In 1875, lightning struck the spire, forcing its removal, while the tower and remainder of the structure survived unharmed. A compact hipped covering was subsequently placed over the tower to prevent water entering. The earlier building gave way to today’s church in 1890. Sir Arthur Blomfield designed it with Gothic forms inspired by the fifteenth century. A tower was proposed for the west end but was not completed. Alan Shearer’s wedding took place there in 1991.
