About Shirley Parish Church

Shirley Parish Church is an active Church of England place of worship on St James Road in Southampton’s Shirley district. Dedicated to St James, it serves as the parish’s remaining church premises after St John’s ceased to operate. The building has Grade II listed status.

Christian worship was recorded in Shirley in 1085, but the earlier church was pulled down in 1609 after Shirley and Millbrook became a single parish. Today’s building, created by local architect William Hinves, opened with a consecration led by Winchester’s bishop on 20 August 1836. Its design follows the later phase of English Gothic architecture and includes a battlement-topped square tower. Galleries installed four years later expanded seating to 1,080. A clock followed in 1875, while alterations in 1881 provided another chancel and fresh seating. Renovation work during 1994 removed the pews, made the floor even and introduced carpeting.
