Saint Mary's Church is a Church of England place of worship on Chapel Road in Southampton, Hampshire. It is the city’s civic and mother church, as well as its largest and tallest church. The building is Grade II listed, and its prominent spire is a familiar feature of the Southampton skyline.
The site’s Christian origins are thought to reach back to around 634, when a modest Saxon church was established there. Several later buildings succeeded it, including one designed by George Edmund Street and completed in 1884. Most of that structure was lost during bombing in the Second World War. The church was largely reconstructed in 1954–56, incorporating a tower and spire built in 1912–14 that had escaped destruction. Its distinguishing elements include coloured glass, mid-century architecture, an extensive Willis organ and a notable peal of bells. Their sound provided the inspiration for a song later associated with a film bearing the same name.
