About Highfield Church
Highfield Church is an active Church of England parish church on Highfield Lane, at its junction with Church Lane in Southampton. It belongs to the Diocese of Winchester and is formally named Christ Church, Portswood, although its familiar name was established by 1883. The building has held Grade II listed status since 1981.
Its foundation stone dates from September 1846, and the Bishop of Winchester consecrated the church the following year. Joshua Brandon designed the original building, which included a nave, chancel, south aisle and tower topped by an oak-shingled spire with a single bell. Purbeck stone forms the walls, with Caen stone used for decorative detailing. A north aisle followed in 1855, while the chancel and spire were renewed in 1869. The westward enlargement was completed in 1915, and a memorial to parishioners lost during the First World War was placed by the south entrance in 1921. Replacement east windows commemorate those killed in the Second World War.
