About The Barn Church, Kew
The Barn Church, Kew, formally named St Philip and All Saints, is an active Church of England parish church in Richmond, Greater London. Standing at Atwood Avenue and Marksbury Avenue, it belongs to a united parish with St Luke’s, Kew. It was the earliest English church created from a barn to receive consecration and is not a listed building.
Built in 1929, the church incorporates a Surrey barn dating from the sixteenth or seventeenth century, together with timber from adjoining stables. The structure was dismantled at Stonehall Farm near Oxted, its beams numbered, transported by lorry and reassembled in what was then North Sheen. Historic-style narrow bricks and specially made tiles complement the old timbers, while the porch floors reuse stone from the barn’s threshing area. Its timber tower and spire were modelled on churches elsewhere in southern England. The sanctuary was remodelled in 1998, and the western section became a spacious parish room with an overlooking gallery in 2002.
