About Tower of All Hallows Staining
The Tower of All Hallows Staining stands on Mark Lane, near Dunster Court and Fenchurch Street station in the City of London. It is the surviving part of a former Church of England parish church and is protected at Grade I. The Worshipful Company of Clothworkers has cared for the tower since the church’s demolition in the nineteenth century.
The church was first recorded in the late twelfth century. Its distinguishing name referred to its stone construction, setting it apart from other London churches dedicated to All Hallows that were built of timber. The remaining medieval tower dates from about 1320 and belonged to the second building on the site. Although the church escaped the fire of 1666, most of it collapsed in 1671, possibly because closely packed burials had weakened the foundations. It was rebuilt in 1674, then demolished in 1870 after its parish was joined with St Olave Hart Street. From 1948 to 1954, the tower served as the chancel of a temporary church.
